Lounging by the pool and chocolate cupcakes. Does it get any better? I think not. Cardinal’s first volunteer recognition event went swimmingly (pun very much intended). Cardinal staff, interns and volunteers enjoyed the pool at Hampton Inn and some delicious BBQ. Awards for volunteer of the year were given in the Usher, Construction, Administrative, and Marketing categories to some of our wonderful volunteers…everyone had a blast and we look forward to next year!
The more theater there is, the more people will go to theater and the more people will give to theater. Our challenge as theater administrators and artists is not to squabble over the pie that exists but to bake bigger pies.
– Randy White, quoted in Bloom Magazine’s article on Cardinal Stage.SITTING DOWN WITH MIKE PRICE
This saucy, in-depth interview with Bloomington’s, nay Southern Indiana’s, most famous thespian answers those important questions teetering on the tongues of community residents. This dashing man gave me five minutes of his meticulously-scheduled day to chat about the most important things in life.

PRICE: I can’t guarantee anything.
WALTERS: (ignoring) favorite color.
PRICE: (silence)….green….green.
WALTERS: Favorite type of Italian food.

WALTERS: Last book you read.
PRICE: The Coldest Winter by David Halberstam.
WALTERS: Favorite Precious Metal.
PRICE: uhh…hmm…Queens of the Stone Age.
WALTERS: What does Cardinal Stage Company mean to you?
PRICE: A fulfilling day (enter smirk).
WALTERS: Favorite role ever.
PRICE: Sganarelle in “The Flying Doctor”
WALTERS: What is the largest problem facing society today?
PRICE: You’re kidding, right?
WALTERS (slightly flustered) Largest problem facing TURTLES.
PRICE: (without hesitation) FERTILIZER!
WALTERS: Do you speak any foreign languages?
PRICE: I studied Spanish and Russian
WALTERS: Could you say a line for me?
PRICE: Did you not hear the first part of my answer? I STUDIED.
WALTERS: (after being gently encouraged not to ask this question) What do you love about Randy White?
PRICE: His ability to amaze and horrify me at the same time.
WALTERS: Thank you Mr. Price, we look forward to seeing you on stage soon!
Modesty, humor and modesty are the only words that come to mind when this reporter thinks of Mike Price. Cheers to him and his career!
Signing off,
A. Walters (IU Intern)
Welcome to the Nest
The last time I worked with Cardinal was my senior year in high school. I was on an advisory committee with 3 other high school students trying to help boost teenage attendance to shows. I came into the offices two or three times and was done. But, being as infected by the theater bug as I was and still am, I continued to work on and act in shows for the next three years, and when I returned to Bloomington this summer, fresh out of my sophomore year of college and dying to dive back into it, I showed up at Cardinal offering my services for whatever they may need.
Now I work here every day.
The office was already chock full of interns when I arrived, and there was another coming in the next day. Needless to say I felt more than a little intimidated, entering into a place that had changed radically since I had last been a part of it. The office has moved into another part of the building; the posters were fancier; the staff had doubled in size. But despite these changes and my complete lack of experience working on the administrative side of it all, I was welcomed with open arms and wide smiles. Three weeks in and several projects deep, I feel like I’m part of a team here. The staff and interns have completely taken me under their wing, if you’ll excuse the terrible pun. There’s truly nothing more rewarding than working with people you like while contributing to something you believe in. The rest of this summer is going to rock. I can already tell.
-Markie “The Newbie” Gray
You can’t tell from the photo but Emily is sitting on a board about 18 feet off the ground. She was brave enough to volunteer for assembling our new window display. It’s now completed and looks wonderful. Come by the office and take a look!
All of the arts, poetry, music, ritual, the visible arts, the theater, must singly and together create the most comprehensive art of all, a humanized society, and its masterpiece, free man.
